How To Increase Your Google AdSense CTR: Tips, Tricks & Guidelines

Who else wants to increase they AdSense CTR numbers? Everyone should be raising their hand. I’m going to tell you some of the secrets I have learned about AdSense throughout the years, and more specifically what you can do to increase your CTR percentage.

If you follow these steps, you should have no problem increasing your CTR by at least two percent, and you could possibly see a 100 to 1,000% or more increase if you follow these steps well.

Put Ad Units On Pages With Lots Of Text

This one is kind of a no brainer, but it makes perfect sense. For the most part, AdSense ads are displayed as text, and you can force AdSense to only display text ads too, which will work to your advantage. The more keywords you have, and the more content on your page, the easier it is for your ads to blend in with your site.

Do Not Tell Your Visitors That These Are Ads

I have never understood why people blatantly point out to their visitors that what they are seeing is an advertisement, either by using “Sponsored Links” or “Adverisements,” since those are the only acceptable methods for labeling your ads. Google already tells the user that these are Google ads!

Place Your Ad Units Above The Fold

You only have a couple of seconds to capture your visitor’s attention, so why would you waste your time by putting ads where they can’t see them?

Use Ad Unit Sizes That Are Proven To Work

Google, and many others, have said that the wider the ad, the better. Use this information to your advantage.

Blend The Color Of Your Ads With The Colors Of Your Site

Another no brainer. You do not want your ads to stand out, you want them to naturally blend in with the rest of your site. Keep the same theme throughout.

Blend Ads With Your Site

This one goes along with the blending of colors, but the emphasis here is that your ads shouldn’t have borders or even look like ads at all. Place it next to your text, making sure the text either wraps around the ad, or flows above and below it in a natural fashion.

Use Your Layout To Your Advantage

If your site has a sidebar, make sure the sidebar is the same width as your ad unit. A Wide Skyscraper (160×600) or Skyscraper (120×600) would be perfect for a navigation sidebar. Another sidebar size would be either the Medium Rectangle (300×250) or Square (250×250). Here’s an example of a good way to layout your ads relative to your content:

Place Your Ads On The Top Left Side Of Your Website

Eyetracking studies show that people read in an F- or E-shaped pattern. This is information you can use to your advantage.

Track Your Ads With AdSense Channels

You should always have a way to know which of your ad units are performing the best. Utilize the built-in channels to label your ads. It is also a great way to experiment. Maybe you don’t want to blend your ads, and instead want them to stand out. Label that ad as so, and run both variations for a week each.

I hope these tips will help you increase your AdSense CTR numbers. Depending on what your CTR rate is now, you can easily expect a 100 to 1,000% increase. Good luck!

15 Effective Tips to Increase Google Adsense CTR

How to make more money with Google Adsense? Get more clicks on ads. We all want to increase Google Adsense CTR i.e. click through ratio, because the higher times the surfer clicks the Adsense ad, higher is the payout to you. So here are 15 effective ways to improve your Adsense CTR.

How to increase Google Adsense CTR?

* Post Adsense ads them on text rich pages and make sure that Adsense had a bunch of keywords to work with. Getting Higher paying keywords is better of course.
* Get rid of public service ads, which pay you nothing for your efforts. Here are some ways to avoid getting PSA’s.
* Avoid titles like the approved ‘Sponsored Links’ and ‘Advertisements’ above the Adsense ads. Why do you want to tell the world they are ads when google already puts ‘Ads by Gooooogle’ with them. These two terms are the only ones allowed by Google TOS. Any other terms will get your account terminated. Remember to avoid these 15 Adsense mistakes.
* Use section targeting - you can target an ad unit to a specific section of your blog, as well as block out irrelevant sections like navigational links. Useful to get more targeted ads.

What is the best Google Adsense Placement for CTR?

* Place Ads above the fold, i.e. you dont have to scroll down to see the ads. Moreover it loads before your entire page does. The more the visibility, the more chances a reader will click the ad.

* Provide some free space around ads so that they stand out and users know where to find them. Dont clutter up the ads inside your content.
* Experiment by changing the location of advertisements. Track them by channels to see which location works. Sometimes unusual locations can can do wonders for your CTR. Google Adsense support provides some good ideas for better blending

* Many experienced Adsense users have reported better CTR with vertical ads rather than the horizontal ones. But that really depends on your site structure.
* Usually it is recommended to place towers on your right, as users tend to use the mouse to scroll the bar on the right side wiht a higher chance to see your ads. Some have reported doubling CTR’s by placing towers to the left rather than the right, as people have got bored of seeing ads on the right, it has something to do with the sidedness of the brain which I do not understand and there is a tendency to read from left to the right.

* Many sites will have small ads in the top right hand corner, as they claim it is the first place where the eye sees.
* An excellent article on Eyetracking - What We Saw When We Looked Through Their Eyes helps to tell you where users actually see first and in what order.
* Forums are tricky becasue they have a different kind of navigation, readership and participation. Here are some ad placements suggested by Google which work best for forums

Best Google Adsense Link Colors to get higher CTR?

* Match the colors of your ads with the colour scheme of your site. Blending with your sites color profile helps to identify them not as ads, but as links similar to those of your site. The more the AdSense looks like part of your site, the higher CTR you will get. You can also match the Adsense fonts with your website font design for great results.
* Blend ads with your page - remove the borders by having a similar color as your background helps to show ads as being part of your site. Do not blend text or the ‘Ads by Gooooogle’ with your background color as it is against Google TOS (Google does not like hidden text!). However, such blending may not work for you always due to banner blindness. Neither do they see the ads, not do they click on them. So sometimes a bold contrasting ad may work better depending on your website design.
* Experiment by changing the colors, background of advertisements. You have to find out what works best for your site, not others. You can also rotate Adsense colors to reduce ad blindness.

I hope these tips help to get your Adsense CTR up by at least 100% if not more. Good luck and make more money!

Using Your Blog To Make Money With AdSense

In order to maximize AdSense, you need pages with lots of relevant content. The AdSense program works best if your blog has lots of fresh, relevant content - and specifically, lots of textual content. Unfortunately, AdSense can not read images.

Several factors go into helping your blog generate a substantial AdSense income for you. The following valuable information will impact your AdSense earning capability the most.

1. The amount of Traffic you receive will have a direct bearing on your earnings with the AdSense program. The more people who visit your blog and see your ads, the more likely someone will click on them.

2. High Paying Ads -- This is probably pretty obvious. If the content you provide attracts high paying ads, you are going to earn a better than average income.

3. Relevant Ads that relate to the content and vice versa. Simply stated, the information contained in this blog is about blog marketing, blog optimization, search engine submission, and home based business marketing. So, my AdSense ads all relate to those keywords. Tailor the relevancy of your ads to your content, and that will bring you one step closer to increasing your revenue.

4. Optimize the placement and the design of your ads. With AdSense, you can choose the position and the color for your ads to match the color scheme of your blog page. Remember, position, position, position! Make sure you place your ads in the place where they will be seen. This is critical; if no one sees them, they'll never get clicked on.

Earn $100000 a year with Google Adsense

Google's AdSense is a fascinating revenue-sharing opportunity for small, medium and large web sites. Some webmasters are designing brand new sites specifically for serving AdSense text ads. (It's against the AdSense rules to design a site purely for AdSense, so you'll want to include a few affiliate Affiliate links or sell your own product, too.)

I read an article about how to increase adsense revenue from associate programs here is the analysis from the article

Let's say you have a goal of earning $100,000 a year from AdSense. Is that possible? Let's see $100,000 divided by 365 = $274 a day. So your goal is to produce either:

  • 274 pages which earn $1 a day or

  • 548 pages which earn 50 cents a day or

  • 1096 pages which earn 25 cents a day

The following are hypothetical cases. To earn $1 a day per page, you need, per page

  • 400 visitors, 5% click-through rate (CTR CTR) and average 5c payout.

  • Or 200 visitors, 10% CTR and an average 5c payout.

  • Or 100 visitors, 10% CTR, and an average 10c payout.

  • Or 100 visitors, 5% CTR, and an average 20c payout

Let's assume you choose a goal somewhere around the middle, say aiming for 50 visitors per page and want 274 pages earning $1 a day. You'd need 274 x 50 = 13,700 pageviews a day.

Does that sound too tough? If so, you'd better look for more profitable keywords and ways to improve your click-through rates.

Let's try a different scenario, You choose more profitable keywords and make your $1 on average per page from, say, 10 visitors. 274 x 10 = 2740 pageviews a day, That's looking easier to achieve, If your average visitor sees 3 pages, you now need 913 unique visitors a day.

Is that too tough to achieve in your niche? If so, create two sites, each attracting half that number, 456 unique visitors, a day, Can't achieve those click-through rates and payouts? Then you'll either need more pages on your sites on more niche sites.

Please note, because of the AdSense rules, these are all hypothetical cases. I'm not allowed to give real cases. Real CTR rates and payouts vary hugely.Choose the goal which best matches your site or sites.

Then start building keyword-rich pages containing well researched, profitable keywords, and get lots of high quality links to your site.

Improve Your Google AdSense Ad Relevancy with Section Targeting

A little known method to increase the relevancy of AdSense's ads on your site without modifying your content visually is by forcing AdSense to focus on or ignoring certain sections. This is called "section targeting."

Section targeting allows you to suggest sections of your text and HTML content that you'd like Google AdSense to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site's content. By providing Google AdSense with your suggestions, you can assist Google AdSense in improving your ad targeting. Although implementation is easy, I recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement section targeting.

To implement section targeting, you'll need to add a set of special HTML comment tags to your code. These tags will mark the beginning and end of whichever section(s) you'd like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting.

The HTML tags to emphasize a page section take the following format:

You can also designate sections you'd like to have ignored by adding a (weight=ignore) to the starting tag:

With these tags added to your HTML code, your final code may look like the following:

Irrelevant text here

This is the most important content of your webpage. You prefer Ads being shown related to this content.

Other irrelevant or low-paying keyword-content here

You can use section targeting to make suggestions about as many sections of a page as you like. However, please be aware that Google AdSense can't guarantee results, and that it may take up to 2 weeks before Google's crawlers take any changes you've made to your site into account.

In order to properly implement this feature, you'll need to include a significant amount of content within the section targeting tags. Including insufficient content may result in less relevant ads or Public Service Ads. In addition, please keep in mind that this feature should only be used to emphasize significant sections of your site's relevant content. It is against Google AdSense's program policies to manipulate the ad targeting to result in ads that are not relevant to the content of your pages.

So the bottom line is to use section targeting wisely. This means you do not wrap a single sentence or even a medium-sized paragraph in section targeting tags.

One real-life example that I've used myself in the past is ignoring menus. NOTE that Google AdSense ignoring your menus does NOT mean Google's Crawler will so no worries there. I had a menu section with links to articles on a huge variety of topics. Most topics were totally unrelated to the specific page / article. Since I wanted ads to be relevant to the currently viewed article, I wrapped my menu in ignore tags and wrapped my article in ad_section targeting tags. After a few weeks, my Google AdSense ads did become much more relevant and I didn't see the random ads that were related to the topics in my menu anymore!

15 AdSense tips

Google AdSense is a pay-per-click (PPC) program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources.

AdSense delivers relevant ads that are targeted to the content people find on your site.

In many advertising networks and websites, including AdSense, the advertiser is charged for advertising their ad only when a user clicks on their ad. How much they pay (for that click) is called their Cost Per Click or CPC.

Here you will find some simple and effective AdSense tips that will increase your revenue. If you haven't already joined AdSense program, you should sign up first.

Now it's time to show you some tips and tricks that will optimize your AdSense ads.

AdSense Tip #1: Find your keywords

Before serving ads on a web page, check its keyword density. A free and advanced tool for finding the most prominent keywords in a page can be found here: SEO Density Analyzer. Copy the most important keywords to a text file ([web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt).

AdSense Tip #2: Improve your keywords

Get keyword suggestions from Overture Search Inventory and from Google AdWords Sandbox. Get new keywords that can help you improve your ad relevance. Enter the keywords from [web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt and save the suggestions to [web page name]-adsense-suggestions.txt.

AdSense Tip #3: Keep your website focused on a theme

Use the keyword suggestions to enhance your web pages and to build theme-based content. And also try to get your keywords into the anchor text of your incoming links as much as possible. Don't forget that Google AdSense is keyword-targeted advertising: Google AdSense bases its advert topics on your websites content, this means that content-rich websites of a popular topic should attract a large amount of ads.

AdSense Tip #4: Write a new page every day

One of the best tips is to add a new page to your web site every day. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get. Put an Adsense unit on each and every content page of your site. But where? You will find more about that from the next AdSense tips.

AdSense Tip #5: Choose the right AdSense format

Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:
  1. 336x280 large rectangle
  2. 300x250 medium rectangle
  3. 160x600 wide skyscraper

Another successful format is the 468x15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.

AdSense Tip #6: Color tips

When creating your Google AdSense ads it is recommended to use the color scheme and style of your website so that the ads blend in well. Ads without background color and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background color.

Create a custom AdSense palette:
  • border color = background color of your web site
  • background color = background color of your web site
  • link color = blue, color of your links
  • url color = black, #999999
  • text color = black, #333333, color of your main content
You can also rotate your color palette: select multiple color palettes that blend with your site to create variety.

AdSense Tip #7: Position tips

Visitors tend to look at the big headlines to see if your page is worth reading. If you get them interested, they will read the text and look for your navigation links.

Place the AdSense ads in a prominent place around the top/left part of your page or under your headlines, where your visitors are most likely to look at.

If you have an article page with a long body of text, the bottom of that article is a good place for AdSense ads because your visitors read the text and then they want more resources.

AdSense Tip #8: Increase the number of ads, but not too much

If you have a lot of text on a page, use multiple AdSense units. You can use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes and one unit of ad links.

Link units allow the user to refine what they're interested in. So if they may not be interested in specific ads on your page, they might be interested in a particular topic, and by clicking on a link unit and a link in the link unit, they'll be able to specify that they're interested in that specific topic and get a lot more options and variety on the ads that might appear.

AdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won't lose your visitors.

AdSense Tip #9: Preview Google ads

You can find out what ads will be served by Google AdSense if you install Google AdSense Preview Tool, a very simple tool available only for Internet Explorer 6.0. Click to advertiser sites without generating invalid clicks, and easily add their URLs to your URL filter list. Because AdSense uses geo-targeting, Google serves different ads for other countries. Instead of faking your IP or travelling abroad to test your ads, use this AdSense tool to see what ads see your visitors from France, Germany or other countries.

There may be no Google AdSense ads available for your webpage, so Googlw will display Public Service Ads. You can hide them using alternate colors or images. Make sure you include the image in a simple html file as a link (use target="_top"). The image size should be the same as the dimension of AdSense units. In the alternate url box, enter the absolute url of the html file.

Read more about alternate ads.

AdSense Tip #10: What not to do

  • Don't click on your own ads
  • Don't ask others to click on your Google ads
  • Don't manually change AdSense code
  • Don't place Google ads on sites that include prohibited content (e.g.: adult sites)
  • Don't employ cloaking, hidden text or farm links
  • Don't use AdSense ads on the same page with similar ads (e.g.: Yahoo Publisher Network)

AdSense Tip #11: Show images above or next to your ads

Placing images above AdSense ads is not necessarily prohibited by program policies. However, depending on the method of implementation this could be considered encouraging users to click on ads. So you should include a border line between the ads and the images. Don't show specific products in your images, in order not to mislead the visitors. Just use generic images that will increase the visibility of your ads.

AdSense Tip #12: Use section targeting

Use section targeting to emphasize some content in your page. On your site, place this code where you want to emphasize.

Content you want to emphasize.

If you want some content to be ignored, use

AdSense Tip #13: Alternate the colors of your ads

AdSense allows you to have up to 4 color variations for each variable for which you can specify color. You should do that if you put AdSense ads on pages that receive many impressions from the same visitors (for example forums) to reduce ad blindness. For example:

google_color_border = ["628098","628098","000000","000000"];
google_color_link = ["000000","BBB90C","BBB90C","628098"];
google_color_url = ["000000","628098","000000","000000"];
google_color_text = ["628098","628098","000000","000000"];

AdSense Tip #14: Your Google ads should be visible

Make sure your text ads are visible to the surfers in all screen formats. If you put the ads in a table, give sufficient breathing room, i.e. proper cell padding and cell spacing to make the ads stand out from the rest of your content.

AdSense Tip #15: Use AdSense channels

You can categorize the content of your website into channels and then track your performance. This way you can experiment with different types of ads and see which is performing the best. Instead of buying an AdSense tracker, you can enter the most important pages in your site and see how they are doing. Create up to 200 channels for AdSense.

Top AdSense Tips

Google's AdSense allows Web site publishers to display contextually relevant advertisements on their website. If a Web visitor "clicks" on an advertisement, the Web publisher will earn a percentage of the advertising revenue generated as a result of the click. Many webmasters have built content Web sites around the Google AdSense model. In many cases the specific intent of the webmaster is to profit from Google AdSense. Other webmasters use Google AdSense to supplement their revenue. Regardless of the webmaster's intent, the following tips will help webmasters looking to profit from AdSense.

Top AdSense Tips:

  • Niche Sites
Targeted niche sites that have a clear theme, tend to generate more advertising revenue simply because it is easier to achieve decent search engine placement. Be warned though, you want to chose a niche where there is a sufficient number of advertisements available.

  • Target Keywords
When determining the site's focus, consider how much the advertisers pay for the advertisements. If the site is focused on ringtones, like Ringtone Central , the payout per click is going to be very small. Because ringtones are not high ticket items, advertisers will not spend a lot on pay-per-click advertisements.

With less obvious markets, use Overture to determine how much advertisers pay per keyword. The cost will usually be similar on Google. Search Overture for a keyword then click "View Advertisers' Max Bids" in the top right corner. This will show the Overture inventory and how much is paid per keyword. Because the market has become very competitive, it will be difficult to rank well in search engines with a new Web site that is optimized for the terms that have the highest payout. Consider targeting terms that are moderately priced.

  • Aged Sites / Time
Over time, as a Web site is spidered by Google, advertisements will generally increase in relevance. In general, older Web sites will rank better in search engines. The closer the advertisements relate to the Web page's content, the higher the "click-through" the publishers will see.

  • Coding
In order to minimize a Web site's maintenance, place the Google generated AdSense code in the Web site template or an "include" file. This will allow you to easily experiment with different advertisement sizes and ad placement, and keep the Web maintenance to a minimum.

  • Tracking Channels
In order to know how effective a specific Web site or ad placement is, use distinct channels and subchannels within Google. This will allow you to discern what performs best on a specific Web site. Using channels will tell you what sites are making money, what advertisements are making money and what ad position is the most profitable on a specific Web site. Keep in mind that you should run an advertisement for a full week, in order to properly test its effectiveness, different days of the week will vary the Web traffic so comparing one week to another will give the most accurate reflection of how effective a campaign performs.

When testing different advertisement sizes, placement or color schemes, be sure to leave campaigns in place for one week. Different days will often result in Web traffic fluctuations. Comparing Web traffic week to week will give a clear indication of what ad formats perform the best.

  • Integrated Ad Placement
Many webmasters have been successful at integrating advertisements into a Web site. The easiest way to integrate an advertisement into a Web site is to remove the advertisement border. This will allow the ads to better blend with the Web page. Google recommends contrasting the link colors with the Web site colors to increase click-throughs. It is also suggested that webmasters randomize the color of the advertisements, so that frequent users will not naturally "filter" the ads.

Example of integrated ad placement: http://www.golf-clubhouse.net or http://www.security-protection.net

  • Number vs Value of Advertisements
Up to three advertisements can be listed on each page.
This decreases the value of the advertisements served, so publishers should cautiously add advertisement units, as it dilutes ad inventory. In other words you want to serve the most expensive ads at all times.

  • Hot Spots
Like Web copy, "above the fold" holds true with AdSense as well. This means that advertisements that appear without having to scroll will be read more frequently. Hot Spots are areas on a Web page that result in a higher percentage of click-throughs. According to Google, the highest paying advertisements are located on the hot spots.
hot spots map - http://www.small-business-software.net/heat-map.htm

Google does not indicate if image advertisements or text ads perform better, so webmasters are encouraged to experiment with both.

  • Highest performing Ad Sizes
According to Google the 336 x 280 rectangle, the 300 x250 rectangle and the 160 x 600 sky scraper result in the highest number of click-throughs. Depending on the website's design and layout, publishers may experience different results with different ad sizes, placements and color schemes. Expirement and track the results for each website to maximize the AdSense payout.
